what made milwaukee famous

What Made Milwaukee Famous is a indie-pop rock band from Austin, TX. The band is made up of: Michael Kingcaid (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Drew Patrizi (keyboards, vocals, guitar), John Farmer (bass, vocals), Jeremy Bruch (drums, vocals), and Jason Davis (guitar, vocals). So as you can see, they are all diversely talented and are a great example of a band who knows how to collaborate.

So far the band has released their first album, Trying to Never Catch Up, in 2004 and their second album, What Doesn’t Kill Us, in early 2008.

Piece of Trivia: The band’s name originated from Jerry Lee Lewis’s “What’s Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser Out of Me).”

Here is a free download of Resistance on their sophomore album, What Doesn’t Kill Us:

Matthew JayI have known at least 2 great MJ’s who have affected my life musically.  One of course is the late, king of pop, Michael Jackson;

the other is the also late Wales indie- folk artist Matthew Jay.

Matthew Jay may be my all time favorite underground musician.  And yet has made a name for himself.

After officially recording with EMI records, his album, Draw,  Matthew tragically died, falling out of a 7-story building in 2003.  Upon hearing about the death of Matthew Jay,  my brother and I, whom were both in HS at the time, listened to Matthew Jay’s album, Draw, for days and even weeks to and from school.

Later, Matthew’s family took demo recordings of several other songs Matthew was in the process of working on during the time of his death, and formed two new albums of his works in process.  I personally own all of Matthew Jay’s cds and even his music videos.

Matthew started playing the violin with his family folk band, but quickly moved to electric bass and guitar.  His music has touched the lived of so many and lives on through people, his family, tribute concerts, itunes, and online radios, such as Jango.

Matthew Jay’s  music has made a deep impression on my life, giving me a greater love for music, a deeper understanding and appreciation for life, and a stronger bond with my own brother. I will forever be grateful for his musical genius and for his family who keeps his music alive for all his fans, whether be future or past.

Check out more of  Matthew Jay on his official website.  And please let me know how you enjoy his music. I hope you enjoy his vibrant sound.

Put two classic greats together, Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and The Muppets and what do you get?    A Muppet Rhapsody full of brilliance, childhood memories, and great laughs.

I grew up watching The Muppets and always listening to Bohemian Rhapsody.  This is yet again another obviously brilliantly executed video put out by  The Muppets.  I absolutely love this video and so does my family; we got plenty of kicks and giggles out of this.

Check out your favorite Muppet characters in this magnificent bohemian parody.

And remember The Muppets really have been connected to many great musicians. Some such artists are: Elton John, Paul Simon, Alice Cooper, Johnny Cash, and Arlo Guthrie.

Ryan Kelly front right

Back Left: McKay Harris, Front Right: Ryan Kelly

Unlike most young kids who are made to take piano lessons and finally convince their mothers to let them quit, Ryan soaked up all the musical training he could receive when young and still does. This has paid off. Ryan Kelly, a local BYU student majoring in Jazz Piano/Classical Piano awes audiences with his perfect pitch and brilliance in musical theory, allowing him to play any song upon hearing it for the first time.

An interview with the humble musician:
Q. What instruments do you play?
A. Piano, guitar, and alto sax; piano is my choice instrument [He also took voice lessons for a couple years]

Q. So I understand that you can just hear a song for the first time and immediately play it. How is that? Can you do this because of your perfect pitch?
A. Yeah perfect pitch helps, but that is more of a party trick. It is my understanding of music theory that helps me more in such situations.

Q. How do you get inspiration for song lyrics?
A. Just your feelings and then sit down and it comes out in your fingers and then you sing. It just comes out and you try to write in the most poetic way possible.

Q. Who are your influences?
A. Bright Eyes, Amos Lee, Sufjan Stevens, Dave Matthews, and the list could go on forever.

Q. What is one of your favorite classical songs to play on the piano?
A. Gaspard de el nuit [by Maurice Ravel]

Although he is extremely talented in music, both theory-wise and performance, Ryan enjoys all kinds of music. Joking with his roommate, he ended the interview by playing some Tenacious D Wonderboy and Tribute on his guitar for me.

Ryan mostly performs solo and even has his own solo album, One Man Guy.  However, Ryan also has a band, “Green Like July,” with his pal, MckKay Harrris. The band, collaborated September of last year, involves both musicians composing and singing with McKay primarily on guitar and Ryan on Piano.  Although separated while in school, the band still gets together each semester for concerts.

Check out  Green Like July’s Myspace for information on the band’s album and concerts or for information on Ryan Kelly’s One Man Guy cd and shows.

money
It looks like the web’s largest music site Myspace may be moving to a pay-to-listen model.

Myspace is one of the largest music streaming websites, allowing its users to listen to artists for free to find out if they have talent or not. Apparently Myspace is paying somewhere in the area of 20 million dollars a month to pay for the streaming rights. With such large fees to pay for their music streaming capabilities it looks like the site will almost definitely move to a paying model.

The question now is how many people are actually going to pay to listen to music on Myspace? I know that I use the site as a means of finding good new artists, whose music I later can purchase on Itunes or other sites. If Myspace makes me pay to stream music, I will probably just take them out of my bookmarks list, but that’s just me.

Let us know what you would do if Myspace wanted you to pay to stream their music in the comments section.

urban lounge slc

On December 18, Slug Magazine will be presenting their monthly music event, LOCALIZED,  at Urban Lounge in Salt Lake City.

Localized will feature three local bands. All have great talent, but be careful, they are not afraid to offend anyone. In fact, one band was quoted saying that they didn’t think they were doing their job, unless people were getting offended.  But if you enjoy pure punk music with experimental sounds, you will definitely enjoy this show.

Urban lounge is located at: 241 S 500 E Salt Lake City

The Dodos

The Dodos is an indie rock band from San Fransisco, California. The band consists of Meric Long, Logan Kroeber, and Keaton Snyder. Long and Kroeber started playing music together in 2005 under the band-name of “Dodo Bird.” As they gained popularity, fans started referring to them as “The Dodos,” so they changed their name accordingly. In 2008, the band released “The Visiters” and in September 2009, The Dodos released their latest album, Time to Die. Soon after, Keaton Snyder was added into the group for live performances and now the band is currently on tour in the UK.

What really makes The Dodos stand out is their alternative instrumental approach to their music. Their sound is refreshingly original. Kroeber plays on the rims of his drum kit, (that doesn’t have a bass drum by the way), while playing a tambourine that is taped to his shoe. Snyder plays a unique instrument called a vibraphone (a drum and two cymbals placed on each other)  for live performances. And Long mainly sticks to playing acoustic and semi-acoustic guitars. Though this combination may seem odd, you will appreciate the creativity when you hear their songs.

The Dodos new album, A Time to Die is available now in itunes for $7.99. If you buy it now, you will receive their bonus track, “Company.”
