Chuck Biscuits, a well known heavy metal/hard rock drummer, died last Saturday at age 44 due to throat cancer. This legendary rocker was best known for playing the drums in bands like Black Flag, Danzig, and Social Distortion.
Check Biscuits was born on April 17, 1965, under the name of Charles Montgomery, in British Columbia. Biscuits moved to California in 1982 to join Black Flag, but left after five months. He then proceed to jump around from band to band, playing with classic punk-rock acts like the Circle Jerks, Fear, and the Weirdos. Chuck is best known for playing with Danzig in 1988. He was with Danszig for the band’s first four albums, as well as their 1993 EP release, Thrall: Demonsweatlive. It was during this time that Biscuits started to make a name for himself in the underground-music world. Rumor has it that he was even at the top of Nirvana’s drummer “wish list” for awhile.
In 1996 Biscuits played with Social Distortion for their 1998 release, Live at the Roxy. He then left the band a year later for unknown reasons. Some speculate his sudden departure was due to the beginnings of the cancer that later claimed his life.
“Chuck was one of the best of the original wave of punk drummers,” Descendants drummer Bill Stevenson said to a source. “His style was easily recognizable, and he seemed to have just a ton of extra energy when playing drums. He is one of those people who did not have to practice a lot to play really well.”
“It came very natural to him,” Stevenson continued. “He was hugely influential without really being as ‘famous’ as drummers who were actually much less influential musically.”
It’s a tragedy that someone, who contributed so much to the rock and music world, had to die so young. His work will live on and his talent won’t be forgotten.
Here’s a video of Chuck Biscuits with Circle Jerks: Enjoy!
There are hundreds and thousands of acoustic bands across the nation looking for a big break into the music industry, unfortunately most of them aren’t very good. Every now and then, however, there are a few young bands or artists who have incredible talent and deserve to be heard. Here are five that have earned my respect as big-time potentials in the popular music world:
1. Benton Paul
2. Brett Dennen
3. Andy B. White
4. Nik Day
5. Donavon Frankenreiter
If there are any good acoustic artists that you know of and think should make the list, let us know in the comments section.

“What would happen if Jim Adkins, Ryan Adams, Ken Andrews and Matthew Sweet got trapped in an elevator together, for 12 hours, with nothing but water, a guitar and (obviously) a lot of time on their hands? This would happen.”

I saw this band last summer at the House of Blues in Las Vegas, NV. They are as good live as they are recorded and they definitely have their own personality.
This French band, formed in 1995, is made up of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel. Air’s music could be classified as electronica or trip-hop. You can hear their influences of 1970 synthesizer sounds, psychedelic rock, and even a little bit of jazz in their many albums.
The duo released their first album, “Premiers symptômes” in 1999, followed by the release of “Moon Safari”, “The Virgin Suicides” (soundtrack), “10,000hz Legend”, “Talkie Walkie”, and “Pocket Symphony”. In 2009, Air released their most recent album, Love 2. Currently, they are on tour all over France to promote Love 2.
Ladies watch out! This Irish-born musician, who is currently residing in Los Angeles, California, will make you swoon with his thick accent, cool love, and simplicity in sensitivity. David Hopkins just released his newest album, There are Debts–possibly one of the best underground albums of the year. The album’s headlining song, “There are Debts” features Damien Rice, a stylistically similar musician to Hopkins, as well as a close friend. You can check out There are Debts on David’s official website (davidhopkins.net), his myspace, or on itunes.
I recommend the ENTIRE album. It is one that you wont want to end. I have been listening to it for days. Here’s a taste of the delicious David Hopkins:
A little background:
Hopkins has been in the music business for several years establishing his name by working with other great artists such as Damien Rice, The Who, David Grey, The Fall, etc. His music has also been featured in soundtracks for several movies, including: The Hottie & the Nottie with Paris Hilton and The Year of Getting to Know Us starring Lucy Lui, Jimmy Fallon, and Sharon Stone.
William Fitzsimmons is one of the most talented, unsigned guitar players and singers around in the acoustic genre. His unique style of complex guitar melodies and incredible lyrics showcases his unique childhood and upbringing. William was raised by two blind parents as the youngest child in the family. Because his parents were unable to enjoy the arts through sight, they were forced to experience life through sound. The Fitzsimmon’s home was packed with instruments of every kind to allow them to communicate with one another at a new level. They were so serious about music that their father even built in a pipe organ into the house with his own hands.
William went to college with the ambitions of becoming a therapist to help the mentally ill. In his last semester of graduate school, he decided to follow his childhood passion of making music. William purchased some makeshift quality in-home recording equipment to fulfill his dreams. After graduating he became a therapist song writer who found it peaceful to write about the difficulties that he saw others dealing with everyday.
Although William has not been signed yet as a full time song writer, he has had his music featured in the tv shows “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Army Wives”.
His unique past, emotional career and incredible talent combined make William Fitzsimmons someone worth the time to listen to.
